If there is one simple thing that you could do for managing your finances - it’s simply tracking your income, expenses, liabilities and your net worth. Every month. This simple step done diligently over a long period of time is the quiet simple profound hack to build your wealth.
A few years ago, I was juggling work, raising a family, and trying to wrap my head around where all our money was going. I wasn’t in consumer debt. I wasn’t reckless. But I also wasn’t in control. I had no clear view of what we owned, what we owed, or how we were tracking financially.
That changed when I started building and using a simple, custom-made spreadsheet - one that I now use every single month to track our net worth, investment performance, property expenses, and more.
And now, I’m sharing it with you - not because it’s perfect, but because it’s practical, and it’s been life-changing for me and my family.
My kid often comes down - stares at my screen and when he knows I’m doing something in the spreadsheet and he goes back to his mom and says - Daddy is busy doing his spreadsheets. It also imbibes and leaves a legacy in him that when he is big he gotta do these.
Why this sheet exists (and why it works)
If you're anything like me, you’ve probably tried budgeting apps, expense trackers, or money journals. Most of them either felt too complicated, too rigid, or too focused on shaming you for that $5 coffee.
So I stopped focusing on every little spend. Instead, I zoomed out and built a tracker that:
Monitors our overall financial position
Keeps tabs on big-ticket items like investments, property, and super
Provides clarity, not guilt
This tracker helped me shift from anxious guessing to confident planning - and that's the experience I want for you, too.
What’s inside?
🏡 Home Fin Tab – Your Net Worth Snapshot
This is your monthly dashboard — the place where it all comes together. You’ll track:
Cash, savings, offsets
Superannuation balances
Investment portfolios
Loans, credit cards, liabilities
Insurance (optional but useful)
🟩 Green cells are automated with formulas.
⬜ White cells are for you to fill in.
Once you’ve done your first month, you can duplicate the tab and keep a log of your financial story month by month. And when it comes to tax time - you don’t have to scratch your head - it’s all there in front of you in one place. How easy it could be. Even my accountant who helps to file taxes comes back to me asking - can you please share me that spreadsheet?
🔄 Bonus Insight: This one-shot view also automatically breaks down your portfolio by category - how much is allocated to crypto, how much is held in cash, how much sits in retirement funds, property, and liquid investments. It’s an instant overview of where your wealth lives.
📋 FY24-25 Property Tracker
If you have investment properties, this tab helps you:
Log rental income
Track expenses (rates, maintenance, PM fees)
Highlight claimable deductions (yellow rows = gold at tax time)
No more last-minute digging during EOFY - this becomes your year-round portfolio assistant.
💻 Tax Deduction Tracker
A simple manual sheet to record items like:
Microsoft Office subscription
Internet (for work-from-home)
Office chair, desk, or other depreciable
Printer ink, educational courses, etc.
Capture it as it happens, not in a mad rush at tax time and or missing it out during the tax time.
📊 Offset vs ETF Tab
This is one of my favourite analysis tools - it helps you decide where your spare cash should go:
Should I park it in my offset and reduce interest?
Or should I invest it and build long-term wealth?
This sheet lets you model both outcomes and make informed choices that align with your goals and risk tolerance.
🏩 Bonus: Property Purchase Scenario Planner
Thinking of buying an investment property?
Plug in rough numbers (rent, interest, expenses), and this tab shows you:
Whether the property is positively or negatively geared
How much you’d be out of pocket per month
Whether it makes sense based on your cash flow and tax position

My Philosophy: Track the big picture, not the Coffee
I don’t track every $5 snack or $8 juice. Instead, I look at trends. If my credit card balance stays consistent and the big items are managed, I’m happy.
This tracker supports that mindset - one that avoids budget burnout and builds long-term clarity.
Big decisions matter!

💬 Why I Charge for these services (and why it matters)
💡 When money is involved, commitment follows
I've found that when people pay even a small amount, they tend to show up with intention and follow through with action.⏳ In the past, I’ve poured hours into helping people - often with deep care - only to realise they weren’t as invested in their own progress. It’s disheartening to see suggestions go unused.
🤝 I value your time and mine
Charging helps establish mutual respect. It ensures we both show up with clarity and purpose - and gives the time we spend together the weight it deserves.❤️ My goal has always been to genuinely help people improve their financial well-being.
But I’ve learned that only those who are truly ready and willing to change will benefit - and the willingness to invest a small amount is often the first step in that journey.🧭 Yes, I struggled with the idea of charging.
It felt like a conflict - when my whole reason for doing this was to serve and share. But over time, I saw how not charging led to burnout, blurred boundaries, and - honestly - people taking advantage of the free help with no real intention to act.🙌 This isn’t about making big profits.
It’s about creating a system that allows me to help more people in a focused, sustainable, and respectful way - while still honouring my own responsibilities as a parent, husband, and full-time professional. While also investing money received through these services being fairly donated to charitable causes. Such as Pancare.
