Last night, we were in a WhatsApp group, chatting about FIRE — Financial Independence, Retire Early.
The conversation was buzzing. People were passionate and open, sharing where their money is going:
Some are investing in Indian equities to settle back in India at 55.
One of us was debating buying an investment property while being the sole earner.
Others had 100% of their funds sitting in offset accounts tied to investment properties.
The energy was great. The intentions were real.
But there was one thing missing across the board:
🔍 Clarity.
“I’m investing in X.”
“I’m thinking of doing Y.”
“I’ve parked all my funds in Z.”
But the why, the goal, the progress marker — those were missing.
And it reminded us:
🔑 FIRE is a single-player game.
Not a multiplayer race.
Not a leaderboard.
Just us, our values, and the life we want to build.
We’re not trying to beat someone else’s net worth.
We’re trying to create a life that we don’t need a holiday from.
How Do We Play the Right Game?
Let’s simplify the approach. Here’s how we can realign our path with our own version of financial independence.
But before we begin, let’s pause and reflect:
Are we solving a math problem or an emotional problem?
If it’s about wanting peace, freedom, and flexibility — then let’s make sure our money choices are leading us there.
✅ 1. Know Our Vision
Where do we see ourselves in 10–15 years?
A cozy home in the suburbs?
A beach shack in Goa?
Nomadic travel every six months?
This is the anchor.
✅ 2. Get Real with the Numbers
How much does that life cost every year?
Let’s not guess. Let’s look at our past 12 months of expenses.
This gives us a solid foundation to build from.
✅ 3. Know Where We Are Today
What’s our net worth right now?
How are we allocated — property, super, cash, ETFs, gold?
Let’s track it, review it, and make sure it reflects our direction.
✅ 4. Set Our FI Number
This is the amount we need invested to fund our ideal lifestyle — safely and sustainably.
A rough rule? Annual expenses × 25.
But we’ll refine that based on the life we’re designing.
✅ 5. Design Our Asset Mix Intentionally
Not everything has to go into property. Or shares.
We need buffers. Liquidity. Optionality.
Ask:
Is our portfolio working in harmony with our goals — or pulling us away from them?
✅ 6. Build a Review Ritual
Let’s check in monthly or quarterly.
Are we progressing toward our FI number?
Are we overallocated in one asset?
Do we feel calm or overwhelmed?
Small adjustments. Big awareness.
✅ 7. Stop Playing the Comparison Game
Your friend’s crypto wins?
That colleague’s second investment property?
The YouTuber’s 20x returns?
They don’t matter.
This is a single-player game.
And the real question is:
“Are we better off today than we were six months ago?”
“Does this move bring us closer to our life vision?”
The 3 Cs That Make or Break Our FIRE Journey
Let’s remember:
1️⃣ Clarity
Ask ourselves:
What money problem are we solving?
What does “enough” really look like?
Have we accounted for life’s curveballs — kids, housing, lifestyle?
Clarity is knowing the destination — not just the road.
2️⃣ Confidence
With clarity, we can move with calm, quiet confidence.
Confidence comes from systems — not from guessing.
Let’s:
Track our net worth.
Stick to our savings/investment plan.
Celebrate the small wins.
This is how confidence is built — slowly, steadily.
3️⃣ Control
Control doesn’t mean obsessing daily over charts.
It means:
Being intentional, not reactive.
Not panicking with headlines or hype.
Reviewing, not reshuffling unnecessarily.
Control gives us peace. Peace gives us endurance.
🧭 What Happens If We Skip These?
We end up:
Investing based on noise, not goals.
Feeling overwhelmed.
Playing someone else’s game.
The point of FIRE isn’t just freedom from work — it’s freedom to live intentionally.
Next time we hear someone made a big return or bought into a booming suburb…
Let’s not say, “I wish it were me.”
Let’s ask:
“Does this even align with our path?”
“Are we still playing our game?”
Everyone has different destinations.
And it’s more than okay — it’s essential — to stay on our own mountain.
📥 Want More Clarity?
I’ve created a simple but powerful Net Worth Tracker — to give us one snapshot of where we stand across property, super, shares, crypto, and cash.
If you're serious about staying on your path, this will help.
If you need a nudge or just someone to walk with — we’re here.
Let’s build a life we don’t need to escape from. One decision at a time. 💙
